Abortion in Internal Medicine Practice

Cameron Page, MD, Sarah Stumbar, MPH, and Marji Gold, MD are medical experts who have published an article titled “Attitudes and Preferences Toward the Provision of Medication Abortion in an Urban Academic Internal Medicine Practice”. This article was an attempt to provide new insight as to why there are still a low number of pregnant women seeking abortion options from internal medicine physicians. The authors state that the public already has enough knowledge about the higher percentage of pregnancy terminations occurring in specialized clinics hence no need to duplicate the study of previous researchers.

With the research conducted with the intended target audience, the results showed that abortion done by internal medicine physicians was still at an all-time low and the numbers do not show any sign of growth. The authors share their disbelief at the facts due to the fact that mifepristone and misoprostol were FDA approved for commercial use to induce abortion but still the public shy away from primary care physicians (Cameron, Sarah and Marji 647). The author insists that research should consider IM patients as a separate lot. Further research enlightens the readers that IM patients develop close relationships with gynaecologists hence have more preference for IM clinics to conduct their abortion.

The author employs ethos (appeal to credibility of research) due to the facts collected and percentage of error stated. The author has conducted the research in many places, among them Iowa and Bronx where results have been compared and near accurate information extracted. The research results ultimately showed that a lot of women do not mind receiving abortion services from IM physicians, but that IM physicians have less confidence in conducting abortion, hence limited uptake (Cameron, Sarah and Marji 652).
